Concentrated Milk Without Going All the Way to Powder

A low-temperature, aseptic, full-solids fluid milk platform for industrial storage and distribution

Milk concentration is not new. Dairy processors already use membrane filtration, evaporation and spray drying to reduce water, separate milk components and improve transport and storage economics. Milx introduces another option: a highly concentrated fluid milk product engineered for aseptic industrial storage and distribution.

 

The Milx platform

Low temperature — milk is concentrated and stabilized using a proprietary low-temperature process, not the extreme heat of UHT concentrate or spray drying, so the concentrate reconstitutes with the flavor and functionality of fresh milk within its commercial quality shelf life.

Full solids — protein, fat, minerals and the milk’s complete carbohydrate remain in the concentrate. Nothing is removed.

Lactose-free — with the full solids retained, by conversion rather than removal.

Aseptically processed and packaged — designed for commercial sterility and extended ambient storage in industrial packaging such as aseptic totes.

Highly concentrated, still fluid — 5X–7X concentration; a pumpable concentrate, not a powder.

Nine-month commercial quality shelf life — at ambient; refrigeration is optional for extended holding, and continuous refrigerated distribution is not required.

 

Long-term aseptic integrity

Five-year package-integrity studies demonstrated continued package integrity and commercial sterility under the evaluated storage conditions. The nine-month specification reflects intended product quality: at very prolonged ambient storage, progressive Maillard browning and flavor development limit desired quality before package integrity or microbial stability become limiting.

 

Designed to integrate with spray-drying and UF plants

Milx is designed to be installed alongside the assets a plant already operates. Milk receiving, separation, standardization, membrane pre-concentration, evaporation, CIP and utilities are leveraged where appropriate; Milx adds a low-temperature finishing and aseptic packaging step ahead of, or in place of, the dryer for a defined portion of the milk stream. The precise configuration depends on plant design, the milk stream selected, target capacity and end product.

 

Validation

Milx is protected by a portfolio of issued and pending patents covering low-temperature aseptic milk concentration. The process follows an established FDA low-acid aseptic pathway (21 CFR 113) with a proven filing history. Milx developed and tested the technology with a major U.S. university and operated a pilot line at a commercial dairy facility in Wisconsin, producing concentrate for shelf-life, package-integrity and reconstitution evaluation.
